National Day Of Action: Locations for 18 Feb

Date to be held: 18 Feb 2010

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says that health reform stops with him. Proposed maternity reform promised to enable Australian women to have access to Medicare funding for midwifery care, enabling greater choice. In fact what Rudd has done is remove a woman’s fundamental right to self determination.

After intense lobbying from the Australian Medical Association, Health Minister Nicola Roxon has given the green light to Doctors having the final say in the choices women make during pregnancy and birth. Women choosing a midwife at hospital or at home will have their basic rights to informed consent and refusal removed, replaced with medical veto.

Many women will seek the advice of their care provider but few of us believe that someone else has the right to decide for us.

In Australia today a woman has the right to choose an elective caesarean (even without clinical need) but she does not have the same right to give birth at home, or the right to a vaginal birth after caesarean if a doctor does not provide ‘permission’. This is crazy, women know their bodies best. WOMEN not KEVIN RUDD must choose what is right for them.
